BANGKOK | According to Assistant Professor Dr. Kiat Thepchuaysuk, Director of the Center for Thai as a Foreign Language (CTFL) at Chulalongkorn University, learning the Thai language can provide foreigners in Thailand with new experiences and job opportunities.

The CTFL provides a popular “Intensive Thai Program” for foreign nationals, offering nine levels of Thai language instruction divided into Beginner (1-2-3), Intermediate (4-5-6), and Advanced (7-8-9) stages. Classes are available online and onsite, with each level requiring 2 months or 6 weeks of learning followed by a 2-week break. Regular exams are conducted, and a placement test is required before enrollment. Classes meet 5 days a week for three hours each day, and an online course option is available for those residing outside of Bangkok.

In collaboration with the Learning Innovation Center, Chulalongkorn University offers a Chula MOOC program called Communicative Thai for Foreigners in nine languages. Students receive a Certificate of Completion upon finishing the program, which includes pretests and posttests to monitor progress.

The CTFL has recently introduced a Master’s degree program in Thai as a Foreign Language (TFL) for foreign nationals, the first of its kind in Thailand. Starting in the second semester of 2024, this program is tailored for non-native speakers seeking advanced proficiency in the Thai language.

The program aims to provide graduates with a comprehensive understanding of the Thai language and culture, preparing them for careers in research, translation, business, teaching Thai, or working with NGOs.
