BARCELONA, Spain | WellnessNewsph | The Shaw Prize awarded five Shaw Laureates at the 2024 Award Presentation Ceremony in Hong Kong on November 13, 2024. The event, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, was attended by approximately 600 guests from various sectors.

The Shaw Prize Laureates for 2024, including Professor Shrinivas Kulkarni, Dr Swee Lay Thein, Professor Stuart Orkin, and Professor Peter Sarnak, were honored during the ceremony. Professor Kenneth Young, Chair of The Shaw Prize Council, highlighted the legacy of Mr Run Run Shaw and Mrs Mona Shaw, the founders of the Shaw Prize. He also mentioned plans to engage local young science enthusiasts to inspire the next generation of scientists.

The awards were presented by Professor Reinhard Genzel, Chair of the Board of Adjudicators. Each Shaw Laureate expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared insights into their groundbreaking work. Professor Kulkarni, in Astronomy, thanked his team for their contributions to the Zwicky Transient Facility project. Dr Thein and Professor Orkin, recognized for their work on sickle cell anaemia and β thalassaemia, discussed the need for more accessible gene-editing therapies. Professor Sarnak, honored for his work in mathematical sciences, praised the Shaw Prize for its support of academic research.

Additionally, Professor Scott D Emr, Shaw Laureate in Life Science and Medicine in 2021, received his gold medal during the ceremony. Each Shaw Prize recipient also received a monetary award of US$1.2 million.

In his opening speech, Professor Kenneth Young, Chair of The Shaw Prize Council, paid tribute to the late Mr Run Run Shaw, founder of the Shaw Prize, and Mrs Mona Shaw. He announced new initiatives to engage local young science enthusiasts and foster the next generation of scientists.

The 2024 Shaw Laureates, Professor Shrinivas Kulkarni, Dr Swee Lay Thein, Professor Stuart Orkin, and Professor Peter Sarnak, were honored by Professor Reinhard Genzel, Chair of the Board of Adjudicators.

During his acceptance speech, Professor Kulkarni expressed his gratitude to the Caltech Optical Observatories and the Zwicky Transient Facility team for their support. Dr Thein and Professor Orkin highlighted the need for accessible gene-editing therapies for blood disorders. Professor Sarnak praised the Shaw Prize for its contribution to academic research.

Professor Scott D Emr, Shaw Laureate in Life Science and Medicine 2021, was also recognized at the ceremony. Each Shaw Prize carries a monetary award of US$1.2 million.
